Academic Interests

Dr. Benoit’s academic interests mostly include teaching infectious diseases to medical school students, internal medicine residents, and infectious disease fellows. He founded the University of Chicago ACGME-accredited Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program in 2004 and has been the fellowship program director since. He has developed a state of the art fellowship curriculum that includes outstanding clinical experiences, microbiology training, a pediatric infectious diseases experience, a formal teaching curriculum comprised of three weekly conferences, quality improvement activities, and research mentorship. Since the implementation of the new fellowship program, truly outstanding fellows have enrolled in the fellowship training program. Dr. Benoit has long had an interest in Tropical Medicine and Diseases of Travelers. He founded and is the current director of the University of Chicago Travel Clinic. He teaches parasitology and tropical medicine extensively within the medical school and infectious disease fellowship. He is involved in international activities that improve teaching and treatment of infectious diseases abroad and the awareness of global medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Dr. Benoit has a major interest in improving the care of patients with HIV / AIDS. He is interested in studying the attitudes of patients and adherence to antiretroviral therapy. He teaches the course “Topics in HIV” to enhance medical students’ awareness and knowledge of HIV / AIDS. He educates students and residents in the early diagnosis and management of this infection.
