Academic Interests

Dr. Derman is an expert in the treatment and management of plasma cell disorders. His clinical focus is on the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma, with expertise in the use of state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapies to guide patients to long-term durable remissions. Dr. Derman is particularly involved in therapeutic development for multiple myeloma and is an investigator on many clinical research trials focusing on targeted therapies and CAR T-cell therapy. His research focuses on identifying strategies for cure in multiple myeloma. He is interested in using a very sensitive marker for residual cancer cells in the body called ‘minimal residual disease’ (MRD) to guide clinical decision making. In addition, Dr. Derman is interested in identifying the biologic underpinnings of racial disparities in multiple myeloma outcomes.
